"Knit 1, Chain 1"

When the word ‘lace’ is spoken, many people immediately think of the lace items made by their mothers or Grandmothers.  In most cases, in this country, that was crocheted or knitted lace.

An exciting exhibit which showcases the many variations of knit and crochet lace opens on January 21, 2012 and runs through June 23, 2012.

Both knitting and crocheting are easy to learn and have been practiced for many years around the globe and both can be used to create lace.  This exhibit will showcase lace made using only knit and crochet techniques, many made with very fine threads, but others using everyday threads. The way the hook or needle is used creates lovely or whimsical lace. 

Variations include Irish Crochet, Orenburg knitting, Hairpin Lace, Rick-Rack Lace, Filet Crochet, and more.  An Irish Crochet gown from the Edwardian era, a Rick-Rack Lace wedding dress, an Orenburg shawl, knit lace doilies, knit doll clothes, a lace knit sampler,  and pictorial filet crochet will be on display. An exquisite 3-dimensional Irish Crochet bedspread with botanically correct flowers and doves appliquéd to a net ground is a must see!  Many other treasures from the collection including reticules, household items, stockings, and accessories will be on display.
